Micro-grooved substrates to improve dew collection

A challenge in weak condensation processes like atmospheric condensation (dew) is the collection of droplets too small to be collected by gravity. Small droplets indeed remain always pinned and evaporate at the sunrise, lowering the water yield of this technique. It is here demonstrated by systematical experiments and theoretical analysis that simple vertical grooves of typical size 10-500 µm enhance drop coalescence, inducing a few large droplets that can slide down by gravity much earlier than the minute droplets produced on smooth surfaces. Gain of factor 10 in shedding time can be currently obtained between the same smooth and grooved materials.
